Bakery Reviews
Being on a gluten free diet makes it very hard to eat anything at a bakery. If you are like me you will find yourself cravings things that you never craved before, such as lamingtons, pies and Danish pastries, just because they are out of reach!
However if you look in the right places, you will be able to satisfy those cravings with great tasting gluten free bakery items – I vividly remember my first gluten free pie, never have pies tasted so great.
And for more good news I have done all the hard work for you (as well as experiencing many disappointing, stodgy, flavourless gluten free pies, cakes and pasties). I have made it my aim to search Sydney (and anywhere else I happen to be) for the best gluten free bakeries. So read on to see which ones I would recommend.
Easter review: Gluten free Hot Cross Buns (Australia)
Mar 14th
One of my favourite things about Easter time is Hot Cross Buns. This is funny because I went through a stage where I would only eat fruit free Hot Cross Buns as I hated the taste of cooked raisins (if you are like this there are a few options for you below!).
Luckily in Australia there are a number of companies that make gluten free Hot Cross Buns (it seems they aren’t as easy to find in Canada – so if anyone knows where I can get them here please let me know!).
Here is a run down of some of the options More >
The Cambie Bakery and Cafe – Vancouver
Sep 22nd
I have been living out of hostels for almost 6 weeks now and one of the great things about them is that pretty much all provide free breakfast. However this is not such a perk when you are coeliac as the free breakfast tends to consist of toast, bagels and glutenous cereals. A number of them provide fruit which is good but not quite filling enough for breakfast!
So when I arrived at The Cambie Hostel in Gastown I wasn’t expecting much from the breakfast. They gave me a card to take to The Cambie Bakery & Cafe next door to the More >
Amazing gluten free bread… it does exist!
Dec 17th
All those that have to follow a gluten free diet (and probably most of their family and friends) know that finding a good gluten free bread is pretty much impossible. I was under this impression until yesterday at lunch, when I decided to make a sandwich using the Chia Seed loaf Lifestyle Bakery sent me.
As I always do (with gluten free bread) I went to toast the bread for my sandwich. I find this makes gluten free bread bearable to eat. However, just as I was about to do so, I thought I might just try a bit of the More >
Macarons – La Renaissance, The Rocks
Dec 16th
There is a lot of rave about Macarons at the moment thanks to Masterchef. Having not tried one before I had been searching desperately for some gluten free ones. So when I was in The Rocks with a friend the other night and we walked passed La Renaissance I crossed my fingers and went in to find out if their macarons were gluten free. Much to my excitement they were!
La Renaissance have a number of different flavoured macarons including:
- Dark chocolate ganache (Valrhona Guanaja 70%)
- Passionfruit milk chocolate ganache (Valrhona Jivara 40%)
- China jasmine green tea white chocolate ganache
- Rose scented butter cream
- Salty caramel More >
Product review: Lifestyle Bakery Christmas Puddings
Dec 14th
I recently received a package in the mail from Lifestyle Bakery, who have a number (20 to be exact) of gluten free products including bread, muffins, pizza bases, and seasonal products. They cater for a number of dietary requirements and therefore also have dairy free, soy free, yeast free, egg free etc products (you can search products on their website by dietary need here). The package I received contained a pack of Christmas puddings, bread crumbs and a loaf of their Chia Seed bread.
I was very excited to try the Christmas puddings having recently just made two Christmas cakes, a More >
