Domino’s Pizza develops crust suitable for those with gluten sensitivity
You may not be aware (although it’s hard to miss on Twitter at the moment) but Domino’s USA have released a YouTube video announcing a gluten free crust suitable for those with gluten sensitivity.
Now you will notice I said gluten sensitivity not celiac disease and that is because on the video they have a rather large disclaimer….
I have been reading the debate on Twitter over the last couple of days and finally watched the Domino’s video to make up my own mind.
Many people believe that this is just a money money ploy by Domino’s and they were stupid to make a gluten free pizza that is not suitable for celiacs due to cross contamination.
I personally believe that, whilst I am disappointed I cannot eat this pizza by Domino’s, it is a step in the right direction. There are many people out there who are gluten intolerant who will now be able to order pizza with their friends. And don’t get me wrong, I still think they have done it make more money, but that is what you have to do as a business to survive!
One of my concerns, though, would be that this pizza will encourage the fad of going on a gluten free diet to loose weight, something I definitely don’t advocate.
At this stage I just hope that sometime not too long down the track Domino’s create a pizza that is suitable for celiacs so I can order pizza with my friends.
I wonder if there was as big an uproar when Domino’s in Australia released their gluten free base (also with a disclaimer).
What are your thoughts?

I had already eliminated wheat, barley and rye. I then had to remove oats. Lastly wheat and other grain grass juice

There was to a lesser extent. I was very upset about what the Coeliac Australia (formerly the Coeliac Society of Australia) had to say about the deal (i.e. “when you drive a car, you risk dying in an accident”). http://infonolan.hubpages.com/hub/glutenfreepizza-not
Also note that non-coeliac gluten sensitivity is also becoming serious. The University of Maryland stated that anyone with any gluten related disorders should avoid Domino’s Pizza. I also believe from what I’ve seen that most people who have the coeliac gene and respond fully to a gluten free diet also probably have coeliac disease (even if the blood tests and biopsies are normal or near-normal).
