Waiheke Island
Feb 3rd
Waiheke Island is a cute island 14km by ferry from Auckland, NZ. The reason I call it cute is it has a number of amazing wineries, boutique shops and views to die for. For many years as a child I remember cycling from the ferry terminal to Stonyridge Vineyard to have lunch for my aunties birthday. This time for my visit I didn’t bring along a bike however I did do a fair bit of walking around the island!
After I had eaten my home make sandwich for lunch I was craving something sweet and refreshing and was therefore very happy More >
Lone Star, Newmarket, New Zealand
Mar 17th
While in Auckland I visited Lone Star in Newmarket for dinner. My friend checked in advance and found that the gluten free dishes were labeled on the menu and others could be made gluten free.
Lone Star is a cowboy themed pub type restaurant, though it is quite a lot more expensive than your basic pub. It is dimly lit with pictures all over the walls.

Adventuring through Auckland’s gluten free haunts
Mar 9th
While in New Zealand recently for a friends wedding I tried a number of local products. Here are my reviews of the stand-out ones:
Yoghurt
My aunt bought some mixed berry Piako gourmet yoghurt which I decided to have for breakfast one morning.

The yoghurt was very tasty and I had to control myself from eating the whole container in one go!
Yum!
Icecream
When choosing a tub of ice-cream for dessert, I decided to try a local brand and flavour, Killinchy Gold’s manuka honey and almond ice cream.

Constant Cravings, Epsom, Auckland
Mar 8th
I was meeting an old school friend for lunch while visiting Auckland for a friends wedding and came across Constant Cravings in Epsom (on the Coeliac New Zealand website). The blurb mentioned that they offer a number of gluten free options including sweet and savoury muffins, pumpkin, date, ginger & maple syrup scones, slices, friands, salads, risotto cakes, frittata, and quiches.
When I arrived I asked the ladies what was gluten free and they said everything but the sandwich. I was so excited but there were so many options it was hard to choose. In the end I decided on the pumpkin More >
Mexicali Fresh, Auckland
Mar 4th
When in Auckland last week I was looking for a place for lunch in downtown Auckland. I had remembered walking past Mexicali Fresh the day before and decided to go in and have a look. I was so excited when I saw that the restaurant had a definition of gluten and listed all of its gluten free options on a TV screen.
The gluten free options are all dishes that aren’t served in flour tortillas. I therefore decided to have the chicken nachos with all of the toppings ( you pay an extra $1 to have guacamole however you can have as More >
